Remembering Our Relatives
On this day 126 years ago, December 29th, 1890, took place the Wounded Knee massacre. At least 200 Miniconjou and Hunkpapa Lakotas, men, women, and children, were indiscriminately killed by US Army forces in the last major conflict of the Indian Wars. Following chief Spotted Elk (or Big Foot, pictured) they had left Cheyenne River Reservation to seek refuge with Oglala relatives on the Pine Ridge Reserve during the crisis caused by government over-reaction to the Ghost Dance.
