By: M. Ann Reed A Native American symbol of transformation, the raven is often personified by oral tradition. Especially among Northwest Pacific Coast Native Americans, storytellers wear the mask of the raven as they weave together story and community. In such a circumstance, raven becomes a symbolic of the story's transformative nature. True to tradition, this story begins with the storyteller in raven mask weaving a whole new story, one beginning where the legend of how raven brings light to the people ends. In this new story, raven is inspired by crane and his brothers and sisters in China.
