Name change Harney Peak to" Black Elk Peak"
August 31, 2016
The highest point in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains has a new name.
The signs may still read Harney but as of August 11th, Harney Peak is no more. A federal board voted to change the name of the 7,242 foot peak to Black Elk Peak. The novel peak in the Black Hills was named after William S. Harney, an Army General who lived during the 1800s. But Harney isn't a popular man among some in the area -- since troops under his leadership killed several Sioux Warriors, as well as women and children during a battle in Nebraska in 1855. That reason alone has many happy that the name is being changed to honor a well-known member of the Oglala Lakota - Sioux Tribe, Black Elk.
